As i started fishing for winter weather Steelhead a few years ago, I had developed nothing. Until then, I became a “fair-weather” fisherman who all didn’t really know what cold was. Boy did I learn fast.

I will never forget this first time out. I had merely hooked up with a longtime friend of mine who I had not noticed since grade school. Bob was going to teach me facts concerning Steelhead & Salmon reef fishing. It was mid December, the actual 16th of 1999 I do think. We met at Steve’s house at about five am. All I was donning was my jeans, Jersey, baseball cap, regular footwear and a warm weather jacket in the car.

Steve just looked at myself. “Are you nuts? ” He said. “You’re likely to freeze. ” Well, I actually replied this is about all I have. “Don’t worry about the idea, I’ll make it. Let’s go” No sooner did we get to the river I was just that, freezing. But hey, I will stoked because I’m about to catch me a long over-due Steelhead. I remember looking at the pup as I was just about numbing to the core and observing he was warm as may be. It didn’t take long individuals “Ok, how much is all that and where can I get it”. I wasn’t going to go through that kind of day ever again. By God’s grace, I did catch my first ever previously Steelhead that day although not without paying a heavy price.

Through my next trip available I managed to up this gear with a pair of waders, along with a breathable raincoat. The only thing missing was head wear. “I knew I was failing to remember something. ” It was another cold day. It was uncomfortable, but at least not unbearable like my first time out. I had a stocking cap, so it ended up being ok.

I actually tell you my friends, there is nothing just like the comfort of being warm. When the temperature is in the 30’s with rain, snow, and sleet. (Yes, I have had all of 3! ). You will be happy you have the gear. Also, currently being warm gives you so much more of a good time.

Here is the suggested checklist when fun for a day on the waterway.

1 . Waders. You can find most about everywhere. Just like other things, you get what you pay for. I might suggest the breathable Simms model G3’s or G4’s currently being the top of the line. They certainly run a bit high, inside price range from about $350 to $699. You can get the Rivertek Stockingfoots for $299. Rivertek is about as low as I had go for winter. You can also go along with the long time stand by with Neoprene 3. 5 mm. You can get into a pair of these in the price range of $80 to help $200.

2 . Rain coating. Another must have. Rain layers really come down to your own comfort. Personally, I need to feel loose, and agile. Therefore , I take advantage of a tighter, lighter model in Columbia. The bottom line is dried.

3. Your hat. I prefer the Henschel. A great, level of quality oil skin hat that could keep your head dry. Any dry head is a comfortable head. I believe these function in the ballpark of $50

4. Underclothing. There are all kinds of things out there now. Profit anything that is designed to keep the water out and the heat within. Over that I usually use something of wool, more than that my waders. This specific all depends on how warm or even cold blooded you are. Many people like me need 3-4 layers, while others just a couple of. Check your local REI or Sporting goods store for these.

A single last tip, get yourself a dry out bag. You will not regret having an extra set of clothes for the sake of urgent. You never know when you can slip on a rock, or perhaps get plain soaked because of heavy weather. Just fit your dry bag in the truck or boat. Dry out bags can be purchased through Shoe store also. Price would depend on size, costing on average $40.
